Osborne Almeida (Group Leader, Max Planck Institute of Psychiatry, Munich) studied comparative physiology at the University of London and obtained a PhD in reproductive biology from the University of Edinburgh. His previous research spanned the fields of biological timing, sexual differentiation of the brain, the endocrinology of stress, neuropeptides, addiction, and cell and molecular neurobiology. His current interest in extending the mental health span is covered by projects on lifetime programming of depression- and Alzheimer¢s disease-like pathology, the physiological and behavioural control of food intake, and the neurobiology of nuclear receptors. His studies involved birds, sheep, monkeys, rats and most recently mice; in addition, his lab uses cell cultures as an alternative to animals for a better understanding of mechanisms of disease.
