Ana Raquel Santiago is currently a post-doctoral fellow of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (FMUC). She graduated in Biochemistry in 2002 at the University of Coimbra and received her PhD in Cell Biology from the same University in 2008.
Her main scientific interests are focused on the field of Vision Sciences and Neuroscience, more specifically in the mechanisms underlying dysfunction and degeneration in retinal degenerative diseases, mainly diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
In the last years, Raquel Santiago has been studying the contribution of microglial cells, the immunocompetent cells of the Central Nervous System, to retinal diseases and in the identification of therapeutic strategies targeted to the control microglia-mediated neuroinflammation and to the protection of retinal cells. As a result of her research activity, Raquel Santiago has published 30 scientific papers in international peer reviewed journals
